Malik Taylor a.k.a Phife Dog of the hip hop group, ‘A Tribe Called Quest’, has died at the age of 45. He was one of the three core members of the group, alongside Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammed.

According to Rolling Stone, his death has been confirmed but an official statement has yet to be released. The rapper had a longtime battle with diabetes and had in 2008, he had undergone a kidney transplant. The cause of death has yet to be announced.

In the 2011 documentary ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life’, Taylor spoke about his condition. ‘It’s really a sickness,’ he explained. ‘Like straight-up drugs. I’m just addicted to sugar.’

Taylor was a part of all of the group’s studio albums. He was known for his high-pitched, gruss voice that complemented his friend Q=Tip’s smooth flow. The group broke up but played many reunion shows after the break up.
